Iowa soil testing: where to send a sample and how to take one

Iowa State no longer runs a soil lab. Where an Iowa sample goes now, how to take one properly, what the report covers and when to sample.

What is published

Iowa State University closed its soil lab, so a sample taken in Iowa is analysed out of state or by a private lab. The sampling method, the timing and what the report tells you are the same wherever you send it, and getting the sample right matters more than the lab you pick.

Each step on the home page names the page the fee or the rule was read from, and the date those pages were checked. If a figure is missing, the step says the publisher did not print one.

Estimates

This site does not estimate a lab fee. Iowa State says its own lab is closed, and each lab it points to prints a price on its own form. A number typed here would be invented.

The county kit is described as free on the extension pages cited on the home page.
