Iowa State does not test soil anymore
What ISU Extension tells home gardeners to do instead, and which labs it names.
Iowa State University Extension says soil tests are no longer available from Iowa State. The lab is closed. County extension offices still help, and they hand out kits, but the analysis happens somewhere else.
The extension page points Iowa gardeners at the University of Minnesota Soil Testing Laboratory and the University of Wisconsin Soil and Forage Analysis Lab, and it names private labs including Waypoint Analytical, Midwest Laboratories, A&L Great Lakes, Frontier Labs, AgSource, Dairyland, and SoilKit. This site does not repeat a price for any of them. Each lab prints its own on the submission form, which is why the step on the home page says so instead of inventing a dollar figure. The county kit itself is free.
A basic report covers phosphorus, potassium, pH, and organic matter. Lead is an add-on. It is worth asking for on a vegetable bed beside an older house or a busy road. That is the extension guidance, not a medical claim.
